Department Of Traditional Arts Theory  |  Department Of Traditional Music  |  Department Of Traditional Dance  |  Department of Traditional Folk Theatrics  |  Course Description

The School of Korean Traditional Arts endeavors to preserve the creative legacy of Korean traditional arts and to maximize the range of artistic performance in the 21st century. The School of Korean Traditional Arts consists of four departments: the Department of Traditional Arts Theory aiming at systematic organization, aesthetic definition, and prospective projection of Korean traditional arts; the Department of Traditional Music with major programs in musical instruments, vocals, and compositions; the Department of Traditional Dance exploring new types of Korean court and folk dances; and the Department of Traditional Folk Theatrics conducting comprehensive trainings in shaman, mask, and farmer dances. Each department diagnoses the limitations of the existing educational method on traditional arts, and tries to cooperate with other schools at KNUA. The curriculum of the School of Korean Traditional Arts primarily focuses on practical performance trainings while theoretical classes are provided to support those performances. Students are encouraged to understand different genres of Korean traditional arts because harmony is the essence of the Korean traditional arts. Introduction to Korean Traditional Music, Introduction to Dance, Introduction to Performing Arts, Rhythmic Performance, and History of Arts are some compulsory courses that are included in the curriculum.
