Practice in Jangdan Technique I, II

The Korean word 'jangdan' referes to various rhythmic units. 'Janggu' is the representative instrument for jangdan among the Korean drum family, and students will learn about the traditional Korean rhythms?even and uneven?by learning and practicing janggu.
Exercise in Stage Performance

This course will give Korean traditional arts student of all majors a chance to perform on stage alone. This course is designed to give students a practical stage experience as well as a critical review of the performance by faculty members. The performance itself will be the open lecture, and freshmen are required to participate in this open lecture as a member of the audience.
Foundation of Traditional Paintings I, II

This course is designed to develop the basic knowledge of Korean traditional arts as painting has been the method of self-cultivation and meditation in Korea. Using an ink stick, students will learn how to paint traditional black-and-white drawings including the Four Gracious Plants.
Aesthetics in Oriental Arts I, II

This course will focus on the aesthetics of China as the arts of China had a great influence on Korean traditional arts. Especially, this course will examine Taoism and Confucianism.
Performing Arts of North Korea I, II

Based on the art theory of Social Realism, this course surveys a series of arts performances that were actually held in North Korea. Students will enlarge their knowledge of North Korean arts in general as well as being acquainted with the artistic idea and influence of Social Realism.

Usually in Korea, this 'marginal' refers to 'popular' as there has been some class-conscious distinction between performances by elite and by the public. This investigation into the popular or marginal area of the Korean traditional arts is to discover and to reconsider Korean traditional art forms that have not been accepted to the authentic history of Korean traditional arts.

Breathing Practice for Chi

The training for Chi, that is, the regulating of body, mind, and breath (Chi/vital energy) deals with a number of mind quieting and focusing methods and a series of breath energy exercises. When students complete the course, they will be able to select and combine appropriate postures, meditative techniques and breathing skills, and design their own unique Chi practice and dance movements.

One who participates in a Korean shamanistic ritual 'gut' will be surprised to see that the elements of the ritual are not different from those of ancient times. The continuity of shamanism lies in its religious tradition, and, accordingly, students need to distinguish shamanism as a religious tradition from shamanism as a cultural manifestation. Students will examine this in detail.

'Pungmul' is the most popular Korean traditional performance, which is contrived to raise the pleasure of farm works. There are several kinds of popular pungmul performances around the country, and students will compare those different pungmul performances. Students will also practice the modern form of pungmul, that is, 'samulnori.'
